About YAHYAs Hub

Our Mission

Our Mission

Our Mission

YAHYAS Hub provides unaccompanied young unaccompanied asylum seekers, and refugees 16-25 years old, with safe, supportive spaces to learn, grow, and belong.

Through creative workshops, social connection, and collaborations with the wider community, we help young people develop the confidence, skills, and relationships they need to thrive and contribute to a more inclusive society.

We do this because we believe every young person deserves to feel safe, valued and capable of shaping their own future, no matter where their journey began.

Our Vision

Our Mission

Our Mission

We envision a future where young asylum seekers, refugees and local communities grow together. Connected, confident, and compassionate, building a society that welcomes, empowers, and includes everyone.

By fostering not only a welcoming environment but connection and opportunities we can help young unaccompanied asylum seekers and refugees integrate into our society, while developing their potential to contribute positively to the local community and economy.

Our Values

Our Mission

    Shiva Afraste, Co-founder

Shiva is passionate about helping young adults'. She registered YAHYAs support organisation in March 2022 and has run the Hub since.  She is a great networker and has had her coaching career for almost 30 years. Shiva speaks Farsi, Turkish and English.

As she was a migrant herself, she understands how it feels when everything is different from your own country, culture and language.

Shiva is deeply committed to ensuring young asylum seekers have every opportunity to, grow, learn and build confidence as they adjust to a new culture.

She walks the path of her late father Mr Yahya Shahsavari alongside her sister Shila

Shila is a passionate maths and science teacher in a college, with her teaching career beginning in the early 2000s.

She believes in the potential of children to make the world a better place, when they are given the opportunity to learn, be creative and solve problems. As the co-founder of YAHYA, she developed the concept of Young Adults Helping Young Adults and practices this concept at the college where she teaches.

Shila is the mother of two daughters, aged 23 and 21, and she speaks Farsi, Turkish, English and Norwegian.

She continues the legacy of her late father, Mr. Yahya Shahsavari, alongside her sister Shiva

Sabina is in her fourth year of Digital Marketing BA (HONS) and is happy to help anywhere she can. From YAHYA's marketing and communications to being involved with workshops and planning.

She is dedicated to making the world a better place, whether through simple acts of kindness or embracing innovative ideas that improve how we live and work.

Despite being born and raised in Aberdeen, her mother is from Azerbaijan giving her a deep understanding of the challenges foreigners often face.

This personal connection fuels her commitment to supporting and empathising with the young adults we serve. Ensuring their voices are heard and stories are shared so they may have more opportunities by utilising her diverse skill set.

Pervin was born in Turkey and lived in the Netherlands and Kazakhstan, before settling in Aberdeen in 2015.

She studied Chemical Engineering in Turkey and gained her MSc in Biochemical Engineering in the Netherlands. Pervin currently works at the R&D laboratory of a chemical manufacturing company.

Pervin knows the challenges associated with integration in a new country and culture. She went through difficult times when she first moved abroad at 24. Pervin left her family and friends behind in Turkey, making her feel lonely like she didn’t belong. Pervin was supported by friends and the activities she got involved in kept her going.

She supports YAHYA’s Hub to make integration easier for young asylum seekers.

    Our Inspiration

    Dr Yahya Shahsavari

The YAHYA concept  was inspired by the great work that Md Mr Yahya Shahsavari, our co-founders father, did during the Iran-Iraq war in the late 1980s.

He supported thousands of young adult by helping them rebuild their lives after the devastation of war.

Through his mentorship, he fostered a sense of community, encouraging them to support one another and learn together.

His compassion and dedication to the younger generation helped many find job and expand their skills, building independent, fulfilling lives.

He simply wanted to see the young generation thrive.
